Grid connected PV (on-grid)

Stand Alone PV (off-grid)

Why Install PV?

Taking positive steps to generate electricity from clean renewable sources such as solar is becoming increasingly important for both governments and public bodies and commercial organisations.

The UK is a signatory to the Kyoto protocol, requiring a commitment to reduce CO2 emission by 10% by 2010 and 20% by 2020. This places a statutory responsibility on all large-scale consumers of energy to find alternative sustainable sources of clean power or pay carbon tax, added to this price increases and security of supply issues are widely expected to add urgency to the establishment of grid independent energy supplies.

Solion is able to provide alternative clean energy solutions to ameliorate these problems.

Grid Connected PV

Solar Roof Installation; Building Integrated PV (BIPV)

Our nearest star, the sun, radiates energy every year to the earth equivalent to about 1500 times the amount of energy expenditure of the whole world. The photovoltaic (PV) process converts this abundant sunlight energy directly into electricity. It can be used anywhere from supplying lighting systems in Africa to being integrated with the grid utilities on buildings in the UK.

One of the most underutilized spaces on most commercial buildings is probably the roof. This unused space can generate significant amounts of electricity to satisfy sizeable proportion of our electricity demand at work. Excess electricity can be fed into the local electrical grid to be sold on the open market. The fastest growing application for PV in the UK is on buildings connected to the mains electricity grid.

In the UK, the Department of Trade and Industry launched £20 millions three-year Major Photovoltaic Demonstration programme in 2002, offering grants to householders, the public sector and businesses. The program is managed by the Energy Saving Trust (EST) which was established by the UK government after 1992 the Rio summit. According to this program installation of PV system qualifies for grant depending upon the status of the applicant:

* Grants of up to 60% of eligible costs to public bodies.
* Grants of up to 50% of eligible costs for householder and small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs).
* Grants of up to 40% of eligible costs for large-scale commercial organisations.

Solion provides a complete service for clients installing solar power to provide electricity. Our engineers will assess your site and provide you with a quotation.
If you decide to proceed, we are able to take care of the entire process from the design of the system, submitting the application for a government grant; to supplying all the necessary equipment and the grid connected installation.

SunMount

Most of the existing module mounting systems in the market, which are used in Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) systems, require penetrating the roof, structural changes or ballast. Solion has developed a new solar panel mounting product "SunMount" which has been designed specifically to eliminate these obstacles. The first trial of this product was on a flat roof of London South Bank University. The 10.3kW of solar modules was installed in just one day.

Curved Solar Cells for Street Furniture Lighting

Photovoltaic systems are increasingly being used to provide the energy for low power LED lighting systems. The dramatic improvement in the performance of LED's has opened up huge potential markets for solar-lighting applications. Typical applications are illumination of bus shelters, bus stops, park lights, security lights, bollards, road markers, speed indicators, speed signs and road crossing lights. In all of these applications the solar panels are flat for a number of reasons:

* High efficiency mono crystalline solar cells are brittle and can crack went bent
* Too much curvature reduces module efficiency
* Module production is cheaper with flat panels
* Historically, aesthetics has been a low priority compared to cost and function

Many designers of street furniture want to include solar modules in their products but are deterred by the poor aesthetics of production modules, in particular that they are flat.

Solion has developed a unique, flexible mono-crystalline module with innovative directional strings to work even in the worst case of shading. Several of these flexible modules have been installed on bus stops in London to provide power for timetable and flag illumination. The modules are manufactured in the UK by Solion. Solion can design bespoke flexible solar modules for any application.

Solar Bollard

Utilising its expertise in the solar field with the new low power LED (light Emitting Diode), Solion has started a program for the design, prototype and manufacturing of their Solar Bollard (Solard).
The Solard will be powered by PV, capable of working all year around, have a sensor which switch the light on at dusk and off at dawn, minimum operating time is 8 hours per day, have low light pollution, vandal resistant with 7 days battery stand by for winter time and it can be made from various materials Like cast iron, steel, plastic or concrete depending environment condition for the different countries, cost and aesthetics.

Solar Powered Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

The Solar Powered Unmanned Aerial Glider (SPUAG) is the first electrical plane in the world in its class of size, weight and cost to fly for hours rather than minutes and it's the first glider, which will be equipped with the state of the art Gallium Arsinde PV panels, Li-ion batteries with management system, GPS, autopilot and real time video camera.

The UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has Awarded Solion their reputable "SMART AWARD" for the new, innovative SPUAG product. The SPUAG is designed for hot sunny countries; it will be controlled during its flight from a laptop where the operator can view a real-time video. The SPUAG minimum flight time is one hour and a maximum of 10 hours in a clear sunny day. The plane will have an altitude range of 300-1000 meters with a speed when gliding (no motor) of 15-22 mph and of 27-30 mph with the motor on. The SPUAG's potential for civil applications is enormous. Applications such as search and rescue, police surveillance, air sampling, traffic monitoring, field research as well as damage assessment of accident sites where access is difficult such as in oil fields and large damage structures. The SPUAG will also be designed to carry non-destructive testing (NDT) equipments.
